Stage 1 - Desired Results

Establish Goals:

What relevant goals (e.g. content standards, course or program objectives, learning outcomes) will this design address?
Students will learn and understand procedures and expectations in the computer lab, bring back signed AUP (so they can go online), will write their first blog post of the school year, and will learn about cyber safety with a focus on cyber-bullying.

Understandings:

Students will understand that . . .
• What are the big ideas?
How to use the tools and work in the lab safely, and effectively to learn;
Introductory knowledge of blogs and how they work
• What specific understandings about them are desired?
Computer lab rules and procedures
How to write blog comments from a technical POV
How to write effective comments that answer the question and meet the criteria given
• What misunderstandings are predictable?
This is all just a game; they can do what they like; there isn't a learning objective

Essential Questions:

What provocative questions will foster inquiry, understanding, and transfer of learning?
What are the rules and procedures? How is bullying different online?
What is your permanent digital record?
What will we be doing this year, and what do we have to learn now to start doing these projects?

Essential Background:

• What background knowledge and skills will students need to have or be brought up to speed on and how will this be done?
- Computer vocabulary: CPU, mouse, monitor, keyboard, window, browser, icon, tab, username, password

Students will know . . .

• What key knowledge and skills will students acquire as a result of this unit? (goals)
What is appropriate behavior in the lab, and online?
Logging in and turning on/off CPU?
Headphone usage
Navigating in the browser
Navigating in the Blog
Elements of a good comment
Problems in a bad comment
• What should they eventually be able to so as a result of such knowledge and skills?
Writing blog comments

Students will be able to know . . .

CTRL participation strategies, and vocabulary for Tier 3 terms in the lab.

Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks:

• Through what authentic performance tasks will students demonstrate the desired understandings?
They will complete a blog comment in response to a query about what they learned/know and how they want to use it
• By what criteria will performances of understanding be judged?
Quick Write/Exit ticket

Other Evidence:

• Through what other evidence (e.g. quizzes, tests, academic prompts, observations, homework, journals) will students demonstrate achievement of the desired results?
Poll of students at Lesson 4 will incorporate Internet Safety questions which should show attitudes that could indicated issues around privacy, appropriate behavior and bullying.
• How will students reflect upon and self-assess their learning?
Blog comment responding to query about what they learned, etc.

Stage 3 - Learning Plan

Learning Activities:

What learning experiences and instruction will enable students to achiever the desired results?
